Difficulty paying
If you are having trouble paying your Council Tax, phone 01622 602 003 as soon as you can. We will do everything we can to help you. If you do not tell us, you might end up owing more money in extra charges.
What you can do
If you are struggling, you can:
- check if you can get a discount or exemption
- see if a member of your household is disregarded
- see if you can get Universal Credit or Council Tax Support
- use our benefits calculator to see what help you might get
- get free advice from the Money Advice Service
- get support from Citizens Advice
How we can help you
Call us as soon as you can if you are having trouble paying. We will ask you some questions and try to find a way to help. We might be able to:
- spread your payments over 12 months
- help you find support if you have a low income
- help you apply for an arrangement on your Council Tax

What happens if you miss payments
If you miss one or two payments:
- we will send a reminder notice
- you will have seven days to pay what you missed
- you must keep paying your regular instalments
If you do not pay your instalments, you will have seven days to pay the whole year’s Council Tax.
If you miss a third payment or do not pay after a reminder notice:
- we will send a final notice
- your instalment plan will be cancelled
- you will have to pay the full year’s Council Tax
- you will have 14 days to pay
If you still do not pay, you will get a court summons.
