Brenchley Charity Trust

Description

The Brenchley Collection consists of up to 10,000 specimens, including ethnographic material from the South West Pacific area, Pacific marine and terrestrial shells, Japanese pottery, porcelain, arms and armour and related artefacts, Chinese ivories, jade, enamels and bronze, European old master oil paintings, watercolours, pottery and porcelain, Sicilian terracottas, Russian objects of fine art and illustrated books collected by Julius Lucius Brenchley on his travels during the mid 19th century.  Some of the groups making up the Collection are of national and international importance.  It is the responsibility of the Trustees to ensure, as far as possible, that the individual artefacts which make up the Collection accumulated by Brenchley, and presented to Maidstone Museum for the enlightenment of the people of Maidstone, are maintained, preserved and exhibited.
