You will need a pet shop licence if you want to run a pet shop in Maidstone. This includes all commercial sales of pets both over the counter and over the internet.
If you breed dogs to sell in a pet shop you will need a dog breeding licence.
Most retail premises will not need planning permission before they can be used as a pet shop. Any A1 retail premises can be used as a pet shop without planning permission. Any A2 – A5 premises can be converted for use as a pet shop without planning permission. More information about planning permission can be found on our Planning Pages.

We take any previous offences relating to either the mistreatment of or the negligence in care of animals, and any evidence that supports this very seriously.
You will need to supply:
Applications take 30 days to process, with a pre-inspection visit taking place after 10 days. We will contact you within eight days of receiving the application to arrange the visit. A formal inspection will be arranged after the pre-inspection visit.
You will need to renew your licence every year. You can renew your licence and online and will need to supply a current copy of your Public Liability Insurance with the renewal

You might not need to change your licence if you’re making small changes to the premises. Before making an application contact the licensing partnership team by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01732 227004 and they will confirm whether you need to make a new application.
New applications, renewals and changes to existing licences will cost £410. If you're applying for another pet shop licence then add £85 to the original fee.
