Did you work in the brewing or drinks industry in Maidstone?
Come along to Maidstone Museum on Friday 12 October and share your memories with others like you. The event will begin with a talk from Goacher’s, a family-run brewery, about their production and the history of brewing in Maidstone. This will be followed by an opportunity to share your own stories and experiences, which may also be recorded on the day.
Brewing has been an important industry in Maidstone since medieval times and, by 1650, there were at least six breweries operating in the area. The most well-known brewery in the town was Fremlin’s, which pioneered the supply of beer in bottles and gallon jars. Today, Goacher’s is the last remaining operational brewery in town, continuing to produce traditional ales with barley and hops.
Maidstone was also a centre of gin production, with a large distillery on Bank Street that produced over 5,000 gallons each week at its peak. Alongside this, the town also became famous for its cherry brandy. Grant’s Morella Cherry Brandy continued to be manufactured here right up until the 1960s.
Cllr Paul Harper, Chair of the Heritage, Culture and Leisure Committee said:
“Maidstone has such a great tradition of brewing and distilling. This event is a fantastic opportunity for those that remember what it was like to work in the industry to come together and help us capture their memories.”
If you, a member of your family or friends worked in any of these industries, or one of the numerous smaller breweries and distilleries in the area, please come along to the museum on 12 October and share your experiences.
Tickets for the Goacher’s talk are just £5 per person but the meet-up is FREE.
This event is part of a series of Memories Days being organised by the museum. Future sessions will focus on manufacturing, retail and farming and agriculture.
