Brunswick and Union Street developments


Bringing Better Homes to Maidstone as works starts on the Brunswick and Union Street Developments.

Maidstone Borough Council (MBC), in partnership with contractor Purelake New Homes, has started work on the redevelopment of two prominent sites in Maidstone Town Centre – Brunswick Street and Union Street.

The Mayor of Maidstone, Cllr David Naghi, attended the Ground Breaking Ceremony held on Tuesday 23 October at Brunswick Street and officially opened both sites for preparatory work to swing into action!

A total of 94 properties across both sites will be brought into circulation and will offer a good mix of both houses and apartments.  Of these properties, 28 have been secured as affordable housing, partly funded by the Council’s Housing Association partner, MHS Homes, with a further 26 allocated to market sale. Both sites will benefit from public car parks (Brunswick Street 33 spaces and Union Street 48 spaces).

This ambitious redevelopment project will not only transform the local areas in which they sit, but will also create a portfolio of high-quality new homes available to communities within the borough.

The remaining 40 properties are allocated for market rent which will form part of the Council’s portfolio under Maidstone Property Holdings. This will provide a source of long-term revenue and income generation to support the Council’s integral services in the future.

Cllr Derek Mortimer, Chairman of the Communities, Housing and Environment Committee said:

“The Council has been working very hard on the redevelopment of Brunswick Street and Union Street for a number of years; however, the changes in the Council’s Commercialisation Strategy, together with the adoption of the Housing Development and Investment Plan in 2017, have meant that we have been able to strategically refocus on our housing need and key areas for regeneration.

“Maidstone Borough Council is certainly working to build a better future for existing residents and for generations to come.

“In total we have committed to £34.2 million in capital investment specifically intended for this purpose. I am proud to say that I believe this will have far-reaching and long-term benefits for the local economy, communities and businesses in the area.”

The success of any project relies heavily on its supporting team. Throughout the process MBC has been fortunate to secure the professional services of a variety of well-respected industry professionals from architect Calford Seaden to Martin Arnold Associates, and now, contractor Purelake New Homes who have been recruited to take the project forward and make the shared vision a reality.

Both sites will commence works in mid-November and are due to be completed in September 2020.
