As of Sunday 20 January, Arriva passengers in Maidstone will be able to buy their bus tickets using contactless payments.
Following a multi-million pound investment across all of its buses, Arriva’s contactless payment system is quick, easy and secure, providing passengers with a variety of ways to pay, including debit and credit cards, as well as Apple and Google Pay.
To mark the official launch of contactless, a special event was held in Jubilee Square in Maidstone town centre, on Friday 18 January, where VIPs and key stakeholders gathered to celebrate the introduction of the new technology, with Cllr Martin Cox, Leader of Maidstone Borough Council, officially cutting the ribbon.
Simon Loh, managing director for Arriva Southern Counties, said:
“As a business, we are constantly looking for ways to improve our customers’ journey. Following a successful trial at several depots last year, we decided to develop the service even further, as a step forward in opening up bus travel for those who do not find cash payments convenient. “The new technology will create a faster, easier and more convenient way to pay for our customers, which in turn will help to speed up boarding time and improve the customer experience as the UK moves even closer towards being a cashless society.”
The contactless system is brought to Arriva by Ticketer ETMs, the industry’s most innovative ticketing solution, and is designed to give passengers the widest possible range of payment options.
Tay Arnold, planning, projects and delivery manager for Maidstone Borough Council, said:
“Maidstone Borough Council is pleased to see contactless payment being installed throughout Arriva’s fleet in Maidstone. This step reflects the positive work taking place between MBC and bus operators through the Quality Bus Partnership to ensure technological improvements are made to improve payment options and support modal choice throughout the borough.”
