Volunteers help tackle litter in Maidstone
Clean Sweepers will be out in force when a six week
campaign to target litter in Maidstone is launched on 30
October.
Maidstone Borough Council has organised the Autumn Clean Sweep,
which will see volunteers ranging from individuals and councillors
to community groups and schools tackling litter in their area.
At tomorrow’s launch Maidstone councillors and members from
Meadow View, a group for adults with learning disabilities, will
focus on areas in the town centre. They will be supplied with
litter picks, gloves and sacks by Maidstone council, and start the
clean up by All Saints Church, then head up Knightrider Street and
along the River Len.
Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Tony Harwood, said: “We
have had an excellent response from residents and community groups,
who are all keen to help in the fight against litter. We
will, of course, continue to pursue a zero tolerance enforcement
campaign against the irresponsible few who disfigure our town and
countryside with litter and fly-tipping.”
Other groups holding clean up events during the six week
campaign include East Farleigh, Headcorn, Boughton Monchelsea and
Teston Parish Councils and Hunton, Leeds and Broomfield and East
Farleigh Primary Schools.
Anyone who wishes to join in the Autumn Clean Sweep should
contact Alison Sollis at Maidstone Borough Council on 01622
