Celebrating sporting success
Young people were the pride of Maidstone on
Friday night as they stepped up to be recognised for their sporting
achievements.
The Youth Sport Achievement Awards, which is
now in its 19th year, were held on Friday, January 29 at the Astor
of Hever Community School.
Sky Sports squash commentator Alan Thatcher
joined the Mayor of Maidstone, Cllr Peter Parvin to present the
prizes.
Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Cllr
Brian Moss said: “It was a fantastic evening, the achievements of
these young people is just phenomenal. You can see they have so
much passion for their chosen sports. It was a great pleasure to
have Alan there to present the awards.”
Individual and team awards are presented in
three categories – Junior, for 12 years and under, Junior, for 15
years and under, and Senior, for 16-21 years. There is also
an award for Outstanding Youth Service to Sport (for people under
21), the KM Service to Youth Sport (for those over 21), Maidstone
Disability Sport Award of the Year and the Outstanding Personal
Achievement Award, for those athletes that may have difficulties in
participating in their chosen sport because of finance or
injury.
And finally the Schools in the borough of
Maidstone didn’t go unnoticed with these 2 awards, Primary School
of the Year in PE and School Sport and Secondary School of the Year
in PE and School Sport.
The awards are sponsored by Personnel Health
& Safety Consultants, Rotary Club of the Weald of Kent, Hubble
and Freeman, the Kent Messenger Group, Maidstone School Sports
Partnership, MKA Partnership, Maidstone Leisure Trust, and Kent
Sport.
Cllr Moss added: “It’s these youngsters who
make us proud. They put so much effort into their training and
winning awards, they deserve this recognition. They are great
ambassadors for future generations.”
