News Release

Don’t delay, nominate today

There’s still time to get your nomination in for Maidstone Borough Council’s Youth Sport Achievement Awards.

Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Cllr Brian Moss says: “The deadline is December 31, 2009, so I hope people will take the opportunity to recognise the talents of the borough’s young sporting stars and reward those behind the scenes that make it all happen. This ceremony is a big occasion in the borough and your nominations will make a difference."

If you know someone who has made an impression in the world of sport, if they have come on leaps and bounds or if they have just simply reached their goals Maidstone council wants to know who they are.

The achievement awards, which is held annually, is the biggest celebration of sporting achievement in Maidstone, recognising the borough’s up and coming sporting stars, some of which may be the ones to look out for in 2012 and are part of the Maidstone’s Dream project.

Maidstone Borough Council is asking families, friends and sport coaches and teachers to nominate young people who have made a sporting improvement, achieved success over the last year, or who have shown a positive attitude towards sport.

The deadline for nominations is December 31, 2009 and the presentation ceremony will be held at The Astor of Hever Community School, Maidstone on Friday, January 29, 2010. This year the special guest will be Sky Sports squash commentator Alan Thatcher.

Individual and team awards are presented in two categories – Junior, for 15 years and under, and Senior, for 16-21 years.  There is also an award for Outstanding Youth Service to Sport (for people under 21), the KM Service to Youth Sport (for those over 21), Maidstone Disability Sport Award of the year and the Outstanding Personal Achievement Award, for those athletes that may have difficulties in participating in their chosen sport because of finance or injury.  All nominees will be eligible for a training grant, sponsored by The Rotary Club of the Weald of Kent.

The awards are sponsored by Personnel Health & Safety Consultants, Rotary Club of the Weald of Kent, Hubble and Freeman, the Kent Messenger Group, Maidstone School Sports Partnership, MKA Partnership, Maidstone Leisure Trust, and Kent Sport.

Anyone interested in nominating an individual or team should contact Sarah Shearsmith for a nomination form on 01622 602222 or email sarahshearsmith@maidstone.gov.uk.
