Housing Assistance

 

Housing Assistance is a practical way for the Council to help as many local people as a possible to improve, repair and maintain their homes in good condition so that everyone has a warm, comfortable and secure home to live in.

 

The Housing Assistance Policy sets out the types of assistance that is available to owner occupiers, landlords and tenants.  

 

Please note that all grant assistance offered by the Council is subject to the availability of resources.  All grants are registered as a local land charge and may be repayable when the property is sold.

 

Disabled Facilities Grants

Heating and Insulation Grant

 

Discretionary grants of up to £8,000 are available for owners to install heating and insulation (up to £1500 is not repayable, amounts over this figure is repayable on the sale of the property).

 

The owner(s) must have lived in the property for at least 1 year and be in receipt of a means tested benefit or, their main source of income is the state retirement pension and they have less than £16,000 in savings.

Home Repair Assistance

 

The Council has a discretionary grant which can help home owners in receipt of means tested benefits repair their homes.  Please see Home Repair Assistance for more information.

 

Landlords Grant

 

Discretionary grants of up to 50% of the eligible cost of works up to a maximum of £10,000 per letting may be available for accredited landlords.

 

The property must require repairs or improvements to make it free from serious hazards or to make it decent.  Examples of these types of problems might be to repair or renew a leaking roof, sort out serious dampness problems, or to renew dangerous wiring.

 

The property must be occupied by tenants who are not related to the landlord.  The grant will be repayable when the property is sold or if at any time during the 5 year condition period if the property becomes unavailable for letting.

Solar Hot Water Systems

 

Discretionary grants of up to £1,500 may be available to help you install Solar Hot Water Systems which can help to:

  • cut your home’s carbon dioxide emissions
  • reduce your fuel bills
  • increase the value of your home
  • provide 50-70% of your hot water
  • reduce your reliance on fossil fuels
