Environmental health training

Becoming an environmental health officer

In the United Kingdom it is necessary to be accepted on a Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) accredited course at a university or college. Entry requirements include:

  • an appropriate GNVQ;
  • an equivalent BTec qualification; or
  • science 'A' levels.

All universities and colleges offering an accredited course have more flexible requirements for mature students. Contact the individual university for further details.

Becoming qualified as an Environmental Health Officer involves:

  • academic study; and
  • practical training.

Normally a sandwich course integrates theoretical academic study with practical training, to build on each other, but it is also possible to undertake the academic course first, followed then by the necessary practical training. Most importantly the course must be a CIEH accredited one. If it is not, it will not lead to qualification as an Environmental Health Officer.

For more information on becoming an Environmental Health Officer contact:

Maidstone Borough Council is currently unable to assist with the practical training element of becoming an Environmental Health Officer.
