Statistics and census information
We’re Counting On You!

2011 Census: March 27, 2011
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) carries out a census to
find out more about the people who live in England and Wales and
about the make-up of local neighbourhoods. The next census
will take place on March 27, 2011, when ONS will be
sending out questionnaires for around 25 million households to
complete.
The results of the census determine the allocation of
resources and funding given to councils and to health authorities –
in 2001 96% of forms were returned in the borough, whilst this is a
high rate of return, it means that Maidstone did not receive an
estimated £3 million per annum. That’s £30 million since 2001
could have been used to develop parks and leisure facilities, to
provide social housing or to keep council tax rates lower.
The census is also used to provide information to central
government about the size, age, health and diversity of the
population to develop schools, hospitals and roads. It is
vital that the information received is as comprehensive as possible
to allow MBC, KCC, the NHS and central government to provide the
services you require.
How We’re Counting on You!
When the time comes, you’ll just need to answer a few questions
about yourself and the people who share your household with you on
census day, March 27, 2011. Everything you tell the census will be
in strictest confidence and will only be used to produce
statistics. ONS will not share your personal information with any
other government department or organisation. You’ll be able to do
it online or by post. But you must do it.
