Private Sector Housing

Grants for disabled adaptations

Discretionary grants are available for disabled owner occupiers and private tenants.

Financial eligibility

·         The amount of grant available is dependent upon the income and savings of the disabled person and his/her spouse. All grant applicants are subject to a test of financial resources (means test)

·         It may still be worth applying for a grant even if you don't qualify initially.  Contributions towards one grant can be taken into account for any subsequent applications and this may reduce your contribution should a future application be necessary.  You may also be entitled to assistance from the KCC who have separate funding to assist applicants.

Work eligibility

These grants are for works to a property to enable disabled persons to manage independently in their own home.  Works might include:

·         Improving the access into and out of the home, or

·         Making access easier to the living room, bedroom or bathroom, or

·         Providing suitable bathroom and kitchen facilities.

The work must be considered "Reasonable and Practicable" bearing in mind the layout and condition of the property, and will be assessed by an officer of Maidstone Borough Council.

Maidstone Borough Council must also be satisfied that the works required are "Necessary and Appropriate" to meet the needs of the Disabled Occupant and in doing so will consult with the Social Services Department of The Kent County Council through their Occupational Therapy Bureau.

Occupation eligibility

·        The disabled person must live in the property for a reasonable period after the grant has been given.

Contact

You must first contact the Occupational Therapy Bureau on 01622 691640, who will arrange an assessment of your needs.
