This table identifies the types of support offered by some of the main supermarket chains to local voluntary and community sector groups.

 

Local Stores

Specific Initiatives

Charitable Trust

Stores can support local charities & voluntary groups by offering space in-store to advertise and let local charities fundraise in stores

 

Get Involved! – grant towards a customer nominated project.. “The Big…” series – to support education in local schools on various issues e.g. literacy, nutrition/health. ASDA Local Heroes Awards recognise people in local communities who’ve made a difference.  ASDA Charity of the Year “Breast Cancer Care”

ASDA Foundation, fund activities chosen by the ASDA staff. Contact your local ASDA store or ASDA Foundation directly (see above).

Co-Op                              

Can help in a variety of ways e.g. raffle prizes, publicising group in-store, Community Partner Card and Community Food Discount Card.

Operates its Community pidend Scheme to support local groups. Grants are usually between £100 - £5,000 (av. £680). Priorities for support are combating crime and anti-social behaviour; promoting education; improving health (see website above).

Co-Op Foundation mainly support projects in the North West , Midlands, Yorkshire, Cumbria

Stores have a small budget, supporting employability projects and other local initiatives (contact Local Store)

M&S Community Involvement Initiative provides grants (£1,000-£10,000) for small-scale projects which help to improve people’s employability (see above)

Support local groups/charitable causes near to stores with fundraising, donations and gifts in kind.

Currently revising its Corporate Social Responsibility Policy.  Charity of the Year – Breast Cancer Campaign

Sainsburys                        Contact Local Store

 

Initial contact via local store that will then approach the donations committee.

Community investment focuses on: promoting healthy eating/active living (particularly children); donating food to homeless hostels and people in need.

19 Sainsbury Family Trusts are separate to the company!

Somerfield / Kwik Save        Contact Local Store    

 

Priority charitable projects which benefit staff or their dependants directly. Offer educational bursaries to schools in the vicinity stores.

Staff charity owns two hot-air balloons that are operated by staff and are entirely dedicated to fundraising for charity.  Balloon rides are offered to charities for use as a fund-raising mechanism.

Somerfield Community Charity was wound up in 2004.

Local and national charities can hold collections in Tesco stores

Community Award Scheme offers grants (£1,500 - £5,000) for local projects close to Tesco stores, which supports the welfare of children, the elderly & people with disabilities. Charity of the Year Age Concern. 

Tesco Charitable Trust operates the Community Award Scheme (see left).

Waitrose                          Contact Local Store

 

Most funding is distributed via Store Committees

Developed and piloted the Community Needs Assessment framework for local community giving.  Employee secondment programme (Golden Jubilee Trust) available to support local community projects.

Waitrose Foundation, does not support projects in the UK.
