Council Tax - backdated claims
Applies to:
- discounts;
- disabled persons relief; or
- exemptions
The council has always publicised and provided information about
the whole range of discounts and reductions that are available and
it is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that they make
any claim for a discount or exemption as early as possible.
Council Tax benefit
The benefit regulations provide that a claim may be backdated
for up to one year if the claimant can justify why any application
was not made earlier. There is no right to an automatic
backdating of any reduction that might now be considered
appropriate.
Should any request for a backdating of any reduction be refused,
the claimant must initially appeal to the council in writing,
addressing their request to the officer who has denied
the request for backdating.
